Brazil’s ANPD Suspends Discord Live Streams

Brazil’s ANPD ordered Discord to suspend its live-streaming features in the country and opened an enforcement proceeding to review compliance with child and adolescent protection duties set out in the Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents. The measure affects the platform’s live conversation functions in Brazil and comes with the possibility of administrative sanctions.

What did the ANPD decide?

According to G1, the suspension covers Discord’s live conversation features in Brazil. The same outlet reported that the ANPD’s inquiry has already resulted in that concrete measure. Before that decision, the agency had opened a case against Discord to determine a suspected failure to meet obligations tied to the protection of minors.

UOL Tilt reported that the investigation could lead to corrective measures and administrative sanctions. Poder360, for its part, said the proceeding was opened to determine whether the platform failed to meet duties under the Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents, which took effect in March 2026.

What is the scope of the proceeding?

According to a technical analysis published by Obsidian Research Intelligence, the ANPD gave Discord five business days to provide information on its mechanisms for preventing and combating serious violations against minors. The same analysis said the case is based on article 35 of the Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents and that the sanction exposure includes fines of up to R$ 50 million per violation.

G1’s coverage also said the ANPD has widened its enforcement focus to social networks and child protection in the context of the Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents. That reading aligns with the institutional reference from Brazil’s Senate, which still describes the LGPD as the general framework for rights, duties and responsibilities over personal data in Brazil.

How did Discord respond?

O Globo reported that Discord responded publicly to the suspension of its live features and said the ANPD’s action was premature, in a reply to the Brazilian government’s allegations.
