OpenAI said it suspended ChatGPT accounts originating in Russia that used artificial intelligence in covert influence operations aimed at Latin American countries. According to the company, the campaigns sought to discredit Ukraine in the region and also to shape local political outcomes, with a particular focus on Argentina and Bolivia.

What did OpenAI say about those accounts?

OpenAI said the operators of those accounts claimed to have carried out two campaigns against Argentine President Javier Milei in 2024. In its statement, the company placed those activities within a broader set of front operations that tried to use AI to amplify political narratives and produce false content.

The company also said another internal report described false content spread in Bolivia at the end of May 2026, as protests against the government were intensifying. OpenAI presented that episode as part of the same AI influence scheme it detected and disrupted.

What other details emerged from the investigation?

CyberScoop reported that OpenAI shut down two influence operations from Russia and Iran that used AI tools to create fake identities for journalists and think tanks. According to the outlet, one of the networks focused on influencing politics and culture in Latin America, with activity that also reached Argentina.

In a separate report, Unite.AI said open-source researchers had attributed the campaigns against Javier Milei to a Russian entity identified as Politology or La Compania, described as a supposed successor to the Wagner Group. That attribution, however, was not presented as a judicial or government confirmation.

How does this connect to what is happening in Argentina?

Alongside those operations attributed to foreign actors, Argentina recorded a case of AI being used to create fake intimate images of students. Infobae published a report on students at a school in Lomas who were accused of creating and selling fake nude images of female classmates, while LA NACION reported that the case was filed with UFI No. 6 of the Juvenile Criminal Responsibility jurisdiction in Lomas de Zamora, headed by prosecutor Mariano Bonilla.

According to LA NACION, the investigation centers on the alleged crime of manufacturing and distributing sexual images of minors. The outlet also cited the City of Buenos Aires Special Prosecutor's Unit for Cybercrime and Computer Offenses as attributing the following numbers of complaints involving images created with AI in schools: four in 2023, five in 2024, nine in 2025, and four through July 2026.

EFE coverage published by Infobae also said two 15-year-olds were charged and that the investigation was seeking to determine how widely the images were shared. After a meeting between families and school officials, the students named in the case were to continue classes remotely while the investigation moved forward.

TN added that prosecutors would examine the phones of the two charged students to investigate the creation, circulation, and possible sale of the images. That report also said, according to EFE, the images had circulated in messaging groups, other schools, and adult content platforms, in some cases alongside the victims' names and other personal details.
