Chile and Mendoza advance cyber laws

August 21, 2026 update: Mendoza added a second news report on the cyber law, which confirms the Senate's half approval and adds details on the Provincial Cybersecurity System, its tools and the scope of protection. In Chile, there were no substantive changes and two initiatives remain under review in the Science Committee.

Chile's Science Committee in the Chamber of Deputies decided to keep moving forward with merged motions that set out a comprehensive framework for the protection of girls, boys and adolescents on social networks, algorithmic accountability, and an amendment to the framework cybersecurity law to add principles for child and adolescent protection, age-based restrictions and preventive information in digital environments.

Chile, two initiatives in their first stage

At the same session, the committee began considering another bill that would require digital platforms to establish a legal domicile in Chile. The proposal is in its first constitutional review and was introduced by a motion from several deputies.

Chile's legislative agenda now has two separate tracks in motion. One focuses on the protection of minors and the accountability of algorithmic systems. The other targets the legal presence of digital platforms inside the country.

Mendoza secures half approval

In Mendoza, the provincial Senate approved a Cybersecurity Law bill by half approval, with 34 votes in favor and 2 against. The proposal was sent to the Chamber of Deputies for further review.

According to 617.news, the bill backed by the executive branch seeks to protect information systems and the data of Mendoza residents from the growth of digital crime and attacks against public agencies.

MDZ Online also reported that the provincial Senate approved the executive's cybersecurity bill and sent it to Deputies for final passage. The report added that the proposal would create the Provincial Cybersecurity System, with tools including a SOC, a CSIRT, a Cybersecurity Strategic Steering Committee, a Provincial Incident Registry and a Responsible Disclosure Program.

According to that outlet, the protection would cover essential critical infrastructure linked to health, education, justice, security and finance, and the mandatory scope would be limited to the Executive Branch.

With that step, the province moved the bill to the next legislative stage, while in Chile the Science Committee kept open two separate discussions on child protection, algorithmic accountability, cybersecurity and obligations for digital platforms.
